Myth-Busting #3: You need expensive equipment to make good coffee at home.

There’s this idea floating around (thanks, internet) that great coffee only comes from shiny espresso machines with pressure gauges, steam wands, and price tags that make your wallet cry. And sure, if you’ve got the budget and the counter space—go wild. But if you don’t? Don’t worry.

Because here’s the truth:

Good coffee isn’t about how much your gear costs.
It’s about how you use it.

Start with the real most valuable player: YOUR BEANS

You could have the most high-tech espresso machine in the world, but if your beans are stale or poorly roasted… the result will still taste like disappointment.
Start with fresh, well-sourced beans (we may know a place), and you’re already halfway there.

The essentials? Surprisingly few.

You don’t need a giant espresso bar at home. Here’s what actually makes a difference:

  • A good grinder – preferably burr, not blade. Grinding fresh before each brew unlocks real flavor.

  • A digital scale – game changer. Measuring your coffee and water gives you control and consistency.

  • Your brewer of choice – pour-over, AeroPress, French press, Moka pot... pick what feels right for your mornings.

  • Decent water – sounds boring, but trust us: coffee is mostly water, so it matters.

In fact, we wrote a whole post about water, because it's that important →

And that’s it. These tools won’t take over your kitchen or drain your bank account, but they’ll take your brews on another level.

Technique beats tech

Coffee brewing is like cooking: a sharp knife is nice, but the technique is what brings out the flavor.
Dial in your grind. Try different brew times. Adjust your water temperature.

Taste. Learn. Repeat.

That’s where the magic happens—not in the price tag, but in the process.

And hey, what happens if you do upgrade to a more expensive setup later? You’ll actually know how to use it, because you built your skills the right way!
You're welcome :)

We’ve already broken it down for you in our beginner’s guide:
What do you need to brew a perfect cup at home?

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t involve remortgaging your house.

Expensive doesn’t always mean better.

What matters most is quality beans, curiosity, and a little bit of care. So whether you're brewing with a budget hand grinder or a fancy flat-burr setup—own it. Because good coffee is for everyone, not just for people with espresso machines that need their own manuals.
