This coffee originates from the Wanjengi Factory, nestled in Kenya’s Murang’a County, where smallholder farmers cultivate their crops at altitudes of 1,600 to 1,800 meters along the Aberdare Mountain range. The climate and terrain provide an ideal environment for coffee production, with fertile volcanic soil and cool temperatures. The Wanjengi Factory is part of the Kahuhia Coffee Growers Cooperative Society (CGCS), a cooperative encompassing approximately 3,000 members, about half of whom contribute to the Wanjengi facility. Selective handpicking ensures only ripe cherries are delivered, with strict quality control and support from the cooperative.
Cherries are processed, pulped, fermented, and washed before undergoing meticulous drying on raised beds. Post-drying, the parchment is entrusted to Kahawa Bora Millers, a valued partner in Kenya, where it is categorized and processed according to size. The collaboration between Kahawa Bora and local farmers fosters quality enhancement, innovation, and traceability, ensuring that the identity and story behind each coffee reach consumers, benefiting both producers and roasters alike.
